In coal and mineral preparation plants, the fact that water is typically used in separation procedures necessitates dewatering of the products prior to the next process or stage. For dewatering of particles finer than 1 mm, screenbowl centrifuges are ideal. Screenbowl centrifuges are also used in chemical processing. This chapter discusses the physical processes that are employed to prepare biomass for use as fuel or as a feedstock for a conversion process. The processes examined are dewatering and drying, size reduction, densification, and separation. Generally, there are two types of centrifuges: the filtration and sedimentation centrifuges. For the filtration or the so-called screen centrifuge the drum is perforated and is inserted with a filter, for example a filter cloth, wire mesh or lot screen.
